That's never been close to as cheap as it is to make the same upgrade yourself. Apple still charges more for RAMĭespite the move back to DIY, if you want more RAM you're shouldn't be stuck paying what Apple wants to charge you for it. The 2018 Mac Mini arrived as a long-awaited follow up to Apple's tiny desktop computer and it came bearing good news: You could once again take out the RAM and upgrade it yourself. However, after the late 2012 Mac Mini, Apple changed the internals, so you couldn't do it yourself anymore. It used to be a matter of unscrewing the bottom and swapping the RAM sticks, a process that took a matter of minutes. In effect Apple has made a thicker computer with better thermal performance, which I thought everyone had wanted, but instead of Apple getting praises for it, we get complaints of the new Mini being too costly and lacking the GPU.Īlso watching his video, I'm reminded that Marco has gotten so much at speaking to the audience since his earlier podcast days, all those ad readings definitely helped his enunciation.Changing out the RAM in the Mac Mini used to be a really simple process. I personally found the NUCs have problem with thermal under heavier workloads. The thermal performance sounds really good and many will really appreciate the quietness of the machine. To me $799 actually seems reasonable even with the i3. eGPU is useful and now a realistic alternative but it's still too expensive.
However the lack of any non-integrated GPU option would turn off a lot of Windows users who may want to consider it. It's too bad the ram slots aren't completely open like the older-older model. The Mini is no longer the entry point for most people.
But I think Marco is correct and Apple has consciously redesigned the Mini with the new purpose in mind. The internet commentators just regurgitate the old viewpoint of the Mini being the entry point. The whole point of the Mac Mini is to be as versatile as possible to address lots of diverse needs Marco says one line which to me is the important point: That's a good review from someone who's been actively using the Mini a lot.
